How To Take Bupropion (Wellbutrin SR, Zyban – Bupron XL) 300 mg Tablet XL

Bupropion may be taken with or without food. Try to take Bupropion at the same time each day.

If you are taking the sustained-release, prolonged-release or extended-release type of tablet (usually labeled as “SR”, “XL” or “ER”), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

This medicine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed otherwise, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.

Take Bupropion exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label.

If you are taking Bupropion for smoking cessation, get a target date to stop smoking within 2 weeks of starting Bupropion.

Dosage of Bupropion (Wellbutrin SR, Zyban – Bupron XL) 300 mg Tablet XL

Smoking cessation: As modified-release preparation: Initial: 150 mg once daily for 6 days, then increase to 150 mg twice a day. Duration: 7-9 weeks. Maximum: 300/day. 

Depression: Initial: 100 mg twice a day, up to 100 mg three times a day after 3 days if needed. Maximum: 150 mg three times a day. As a modified-release preparation: 150 mg once daily, increased to 150 mg twice a day after 3 days, then up to 200 mg twice a day after several weeks if needed. Maximum: 450 mg as a single dose.

Missed Bupropion (Wellbutrin SR, Zyban – Bupron XL) 300 mg Tablet XL

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Hallucinations

Contraindications

People with the following medical conditions should not take Bupropion:

  • Current or history of seizure disorder
  • Bulimia

  • Abrupt withdrawal of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, antiepileptic drugs
