How Does It Work?

Ethinylestradiol and drospirenone works by suppressing ovulation through a negative feedback mechanism that modifies the secretion of the regular gonadotropin pattern of Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone by the anterior pituitary gland, thus blocking the follicular FSH phase and midcycle surge of gonadotropin. Changes in the cervical mucus and endometrium lead to inhibition of sperm penetration and to an unfavorable reproductive environment, respectively.
